Bungie Partners with Sony Interactive Entertainment
This past week has been a very exciting one full of news about acquisitions made by Microsoft and Sony. The latter, Sony, has officially bought the independent studio and masterminds behind the original Halo trilogy and the ongoing Destiny franchise; Bungie for $3.6 Billion. This is a massive deal and leads to much smoother development as well as helping Bungie achieve the dream they have of expanding Destiny into other forms of media.
IGN, reported the buy on their Facebook page detailing the acquisitions, how some were speculating that this was in response to Microsoft buying Acitivision/Blizzard days prior. Soon Bungie’s Twitter page posted what the buy means for the studio and the future of Destiny. Sadly, this does not mean the return of platform exclusives how Destiny 1 players fondly remember as PlayStation users had access to exclusive weapons, armor sets, Strikes, Crucible maps, etc. Yes, it is a bummer, but this leads to much more than just platform exclusives. This move gives Bungie the financial backing to pour into the developments of future seasons and expansions for Destiny 2 as Destiny 2 will conclude the Light vs. Darkness saga in 2024 with The Final Shape expansion.
Bungie has mentioned via Twitter 3 major points about being bought by Sony:
1: One Community, Multi-platform
2: Self-published, creatively independent
3: Same game, everywhere
This answers most questions players had when the news was first reported but does lead to more questions coming up. Good on Bungie for sticking to their plans on creating an equal play experience for all players regardless of the platform of choice. This is coupled with the cross-play functionality that Bungie has implemented and is continuing to support as gaming technology advances.
Not only is Sony providing Bungie the means to develop their future support of Destiny 2 to deliver top-quality content to players but to help Bungie’s plans on expanding the Destiny franchise to other media outlets. Sony had announced they are more than willing to help Destiny become a movie franchise which is something that fans would be very welcoming as Destiny will make a fantastic movie series as the lore, world-building that Bungie has created over the years will lead to a franchise like never- before.
